Arches National Park Overview
Arches
National Park preserves over two thousand natural
sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate
Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological
resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has
exposed millions of years of geologic history. The
extraordinary features of the park, including balanced
rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking
environment of contrasting colors, landforms and
textures. A paved scenic drive takes visitors to major
points of interest like the Window Section, Balanced
Rock, Park Avenue, Courthouse Towers and Wolfe Ranch.
Exploration
Exploration of Arches National Park is as varied as the
formations within the park. Visitors just passing
through the area can get a great introduction to the
park in just a few hours by exploring the scenic drive
and several of the viewpoints. Those wanting to
experience some of the park's hiking trails, longer
hikes lead to many spectacular rock formations,
including Delicate Arch, and the Devils Garden. Also,
consider attending an interpretive program. Guided
walks, short talks and campfire programs are offered
daily March through October.

Hiking
If you are considering hiking, Arches contains a wealth
of hiking trails. Ranging in length and difficulty,
these trails provide access to outstanding viewpoints
and many of the park's famous features, including
Balanced Rock and Delicate Arch. In many cases, trails
travel under arches, affording quite a different
perspective than what is visible from a car.
Ranger Guided Hikes
Ranger-guided hikes in the Fiery Furnace section are a
true family adventure. Reservations for this hike must
be made in the visitor's center and a fee is charged.
These 2.5 to 3 hour hikes are moderately strenuous,
requiring the occasional use of hands to scramble
through narrow cracks and along narrow ledges. Visitors
are encouraged to accompany a ranger for safety and to
reduce impacts. In order to visit the Fiery Furnace
without a ranger, visitors must obtain a permit (fee
charged) at the visitor center. Group size is limited,
and these popular walks often fill a day or two in
advance. Make your reservation and pay your fee at the
visitor center up to seven days in advance of the walk
for groups of no more than ten people. Larger groups can
request a special tour by contacting the park; a minimum
of four weeks notice is advised.
Location
Arches National Park is located in southeastern Utah,
just 5 miles north of the town of Moab, on Highway 191.
Park Hours
The park is open year round, 24 hours a day. Peak
visitor season runs from mid-March through October. The
cooler weather months, when snow occasionally blankets
the red rocks, is a particularly beautiful time to
visit.
Visitor Center
The visitor center is open year round, except for
December 25th. Hours vary according to the season.
